At the department of Electrical Engineering, research and education are performed in the areas of Communication and Antenna systems, Electric Power Engineering, Signal processing and Biomedical engineering, and Systems and Control. We work with challenges for a sustainable future in society of today, for example in the growing demands concerning efficient systems for communications and electrification. The department provides about 100 courses, of which most are included in the Master’s Programs ”Biomedical Engineering”, “Electric Power Engineering”, ”Systems, Control and Mechatronics” and ”Communication Engineering”.

The Division of Electric Power Engineering conducts research within a broad range of topics in electric power technology. Our purpose is to develop interdisciplinary research areas within the university and in close cooperation with external partners. Research activities at the division are organized in the following main areas: high voltage engineering, electric power systems, power electronics and electrical machines. Our research is based on a solid theoretical basis and extensive experimental verification in our laboratories equipped with modern test facilities and instruments. We are a team of senior researchers and PhD students working in a dynamic international environment and conducting research in extensive national and international collaborations with academia, industry and society. Research in high voltage engineering focus today on materials for high voltage insulation systems (including cables and other power components) and development of their diagnostic methods as well as computer simulations of physical phenomena in insulating media.
This position is within a 2-years project funded by the Area of Advance Energy at Chalmers University of Technology. The project is conducted in cooperation between four research groups at Chalmers: High voltage, Solid state physics, Chemistry and Materials Science. The work focuses on advanced characterization of new insulation materials for next generation of high voltage power cables. Modern high voltage direct current (HVDC) cables insulated by crosslinked polyethylene are the critical components in integrating renewable energy sources to the grid. Traditionally, the crosslinking is carried out using peroxides, which lead to the presence of byproducts compromising the purity of the raw material and its electrical insulation properties. To minimize this effect alternative materials concepts will be explored. The aim of the project is to evaluate whether these new material solutions provides the high-performance demands required for HVDC cable insulation. This will be achieved by performing extensive testing and evaluations including in depth rheological and electrical characterization combined with computer simulations. State of the art techniques from the four research groups will be utilized to elucidate important design criteria for future HVDC cables. The tasks of the post-doctor researcher will be to coordinate the work, to conduct the majority of the experiments on electrical characterization of materials with the guidance from senior researchers and to disseminate results in the form of models, reports, data sets, articles and presentations on meetings and symposiums.
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).
To be qualified the applicant must hold a Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Physics.
Computer modelling and simulation experience.
Knowledge in using advanced FEM software for modeling materials and ability to interpret results of measurements using computer models is a merit.
Good proficiency in English orally and in writing is required.
